Hey Mango, Mango Italiano. Hey Mango… Well, not quite. But when I first served my dear dad a glass of our Mango flavour Nourish Drink, he sang his version of the Hey Mambo song, thinking it had been written about the drink. As you may know, Dad had frontotemporal lobe dementia and died last year, but we sing this song in his memory.
Mangoes have another strong family connection for us, as they are a huge favourite of my daughter Maya, who was born in India, where some of the best Alfonso mangoes are grown. Memories of visiting her homeland also evoke the sweet, perfumed taste of mangoes, as we enjoyed eating the fresh fruit there for breakfast, the juice running down our chins as we savoured every mouthful.
It’s no surprise, then, that I chose mango when deciding the flavours for Nourish Drinks (the others are Vanilla, Chocolate and Raspberry). Mangoes don’t just taste delicious – they’re full of nutritional benefits, too. The fruit is rich in antioxidants, particularly mangiferin and gallotannins, which studies show may reduce harm from exposure to toxins, balance cholesterol and protect the heart.
Regularly eating mangoes has been shown to improve gut health, due to the fibre they contain and polyphenol compounds that research shows may reduce inflammation of the digestive system. The fruit also contains compounds that protect the eye from blue light (helping minimise the effect of screen time) and protect against age-related macular degeneration.
And can I mention again, they taste amazing!
